From the glitz and glam of Miami’s South Beach, to the rowdy and historic streets of Key West, to the endless theme park fun in Orlando, to the charming and cultural city of St. Augustine, Florida has something for everyone. Whether you want to relax on a tropical beach, learn about history and culture, experience the thrills of a theme park, or party until you forget your own name—Florida really has it all.

But with so many unique cities to choose from, it can be tough to decide where to visit in Florida. So I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 cities that you won’t want to miss on your next trip to the Sunshine State.

So sit back, relax, slather on the sunscreen, and get ready to discover (in no particular order) the best places to visit in the Sunshine State:

#1 – Miami

Sure, it’s hot, humid, and overrun with tourists, but who doesn’t love a good beach vacation? Plus, you can pretend you’re on a fancy international trip without ever leaving the country.

Beyond the famous nightlife, beaches, and nightlife on beaches, Miami also has a thriving arts scene, with galleries and museums showcasing work from local and international artists. It’s also home to the Wynwood Walls, an outdoor street art museum featuring works by local and international artists, and the Miami Design District, a trendy neighborhood filled with high-end shops and designer boutiques.

Don’t forget to spend a day exploring Miami’s vibrant and charming neighborhood of Coconut Grove. Located just a few miles south of downtown, Coconut Grove is known for its bohemian atmosphere, tree-lined streets, and beautiful bayfront parks. With its mix of trendy shops, delicious restaurants, and cultural attractions, Coconut Grove is the perfect place to escape the tourist crowds and experience a different side of Miami.

One of the highlights of Coconut Grove is the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a stunning European-style mansion surrounded by sprawling gardens and fountains. Visitors can take a tour of the mansion to learn about its history and see the breathtaking art and antiques inside. Or, they can simply relax in the gardens and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Of course, any trip to Miami would be incomplete without a visit to South Beach—the land of toned abs, designer micro bikinis, and overpriced cocktails. If you want to feel like you’re on the set of a music video and/or rub elbows with celebrities, then SoBe is the place for you. And let’s not forget the beach itself, which is actually quite beautiful and perfect for soaking up the sun and people-watching.

But if you’re not into the whole “beach” thing (why are you in South Beach?) you can always walk through the Art Deco District and take in all the retro buildings and Lamborghinis you see in every movie that takes place in Miami. Just remember to bring a wad of cash if you’re planning to dine on Ocean Drive.

If you’re a fan of Scarface, you can even visit the former Versace Mansion, now known as the Villa Casa Casuarina, which was featured in the film. Or you can visit the Miami Beach Botanical Garden and pretend you’re actually interested in plants. Despite the crowds and the pretentious atmosphere, South Beach is undeniably a beautiful and luxurious place to spend a day when you’re in Miami.

If you’re looking for a luxurious and authentic Miami vacation experience, look no further than the famous Fontainebleau hotel. Located in the heart of Miami Beach, this iconic hotel boasts a stunning oceanfront location and luxurious rooms, and has been a favorite among tourists and celebrities alike since its opening in 1954.

What really sets the Fontainebleau apart from other hotels in Miami is its rich history and cultural significance. The hotel has played host to some of the biggest names in entertainment, including Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe. And it has been featured in numerous films and TV shows, making it a true icon of Miami Beach.

So if you want to experience the glamour and sophistication of old-school Miami, there’s no better place to stay than the Fontainebleau. With its luxurious amenities, stunning location, and rich history, this hotel is the ultimate destination for a truly authentic Miami vacation.

#2 – Key West

It’s the southernmost point in the United States, which means you can say you’ve been to the “bottom” of the country. Plus, it’s home to the notorious Duval Street, where you can party with the rowdiest of revelers and wake up not remembering a single thing. Fun!

But besides the boozy revelry, Key West is also home to the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, where you can learn about the life and work of the famous author and see his six-toed cats. It also has the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, a beautiful sanctuary filled with tropical plants and colorful butterflies, and the Key West Aquarium, where you can learn about the marine life of the Keys.

The city itself is home to a number of charming hotels and bed and breakfasts—perfect for a romantic getaway—as well as a number of delicious restaurants serving up fresh seafood and other local specialties like conch fritters. And of course, no trip to Key West would be complete without trying a slice of the city’s famous Key Lime Pie, a tart and tangy dessert made with locally grown key limes.

#3 – Orlando

It’s the theme park capital of the world, so you know what that means: If you’re into long lines, overpriced food, and sweating in the summer heat, this is the place for you! (Just kidding.) Walt Disney World and Universal Studios are two of the funnest places on the planet for kids of any age, but there is still so much more to “The City Beautiful”: from gorgeous botanical gardens and water parks to a vibrant nightlife.

Even further beyond the theme parks, Orlando is also home to the Orlando Science Center, where you can learn about science, technology, engineering, and math through interactive exhibits and demonstrations, and the Orlando Museum of Art, featuring works by Florida artists and international masters.

And don’t forget the world-famous Lake Eola Park, where you can enjoy an outdoor movie night or just relax and take in the gorgeous views. Plus, if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and pretend you’re a Hogwarts student (until you’re kicked out for being too old). Whether you’re looking for thrills or culture, Orlando has it all—just don’t forget your sunscreen.

#4 – St. Augustine

It’s the oldest city in the United States, so you can go on a history tour and feel really cultured. Plus, the Castillo de San Marcos is pretty cool to look at, even if it is just a bunch of old rocks.

Besides its plentiful historical landmarks, St. Augustine is also home to a number of charming bed and breakfasts, perfect for a romantic getaway. It’s also home to the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park, where you can see alligators, crocodiles, and other reptiles up close, and the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum, filled with artifacts and displays about pirates and their treasures.

St. Augustine is also home to a number of charming antique shops, where you can browse through a variety of vintage and collectible items. And if you feel like something a little more intense than antiquing, you can try your hand at water sports like kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or surfing. You also won’t want to miss the St. Augustine Food Tour, where you can sample the city’s best culinary offerings while learning about the rich history and culture of the oldest city in the U.S.

#5 – Tampa

It’s got a pretty decent aquarium and a bustling downtown area, but let’s be real: the best part about Tampa is that it’s close to Clearwater Beach, which has some of the most beautiful beaches in the state. Just try not to get too sunburnt or eaten by a shark.

In addition to the beach (and the Buccaneers), Tampa is also home to the Tampa Bay History Center, where you can learn about the history of Tampa Bay and Florida, and the Tampa Theatre, a historic, elaborate movie palace with daily film screenings and live performances.

When it comes to dining, Tampa has something for everyone. From trendy rooftop bars to classic seafood joints, the city has a diverse and vibrant food scene. And if you’re looking for some outdoor fun, this area also has plenty to offer. The city’s home to the Tampa Riverwalk, a 2.4 mile pedestrian path that winds through the heart of downtown and offers stunning views of the Hillsborough River. You can also take a ride on the Riverwalk Water Taxi, which will take you to some of the city’s most popular attractions, including the Florida Aquarium and Sparkman Wharf/Channelside Bay Plaza.

#6 – Naples

It’s a haven for the wealthy, so if you want to rub elbows with the rich and famous (or just pretend you’re one of them), this is the place to be. Just make sure to bring a credit card with a high limit, because everything here is expensive.

But besides the luxury shopping, Naples is also home to the Naples Zoo, where you can see a wide variety of animals and learn about conservation efforts. There’s also the Naples Pier, a popular spot for fishing and watching the sunset, and the Naples Botanical Garden, a 170-acre tropical paradise featuring plants from around the world.

Then again, if you are looking to indulge in some high-end shopping, Naples definitely has you covered. The city’s home to the Waterside Shops, a luxurious outdoor mall featuring designer stores and fine dining restaurants, as well as the 5th Avenue South shopping district, where you can browse art galleries, boutiques, and more.

And when it comes to dining, Naples has no shortage of options, from fine dining restaurants featuring locally-sourced ingredients, to casual seafood shacks serving up fresh catches from the Gulf of Mexico. Just make sure to bring your credit card and your finest attire, because everything in this city is top-notch.

#7 – Jacksonville

It’s the largest city in the state, so there’s plenty to do, from visiting the Museum of Science and History to catching a football game at EverBank Field. And if you’re feeling brave, you can even try surfing in the Atlantic (but maybe don’t try it during hurricane season).

Beyond that, it’s also home to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, where you can see a variety of animals and participate in conservation efforts, and the Jacksonville Arboretum and Gardens, a 120-acre nature preserve with walking trails and educational programs.

If you’re a fan of the arts, you won’t want to miss the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens, which features a stunning collection of American and European art, as well as beautiful gardens and a historic home. And for a taste of local culture, be sure to visit the Riverside Arts Market, an outdoor market featuring the work of local artists, musicians, and food vendors.

Jacksonville’s also home to a number of exciting events and festivals throughout the year, including the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, the Jacksonville Film Festival, and the Riverside Craft Beer Festival.

#8 – Panama City Beach

It’s known for its spring break parties, so if you’re looking to relive your college glory days (or just want an excuse to get drunk in the middle of the day), this is the place to be. Just be prepared for a headache the next morning (and maybe a visit from the cops).

In addition to the party scene, Panama City Beach is home to Gulf World Marine Park, where you can see dolphins, sea lions, and other marine animals up close, while nursing your throbbing head. It’s also home to the Conservation Park, a protected natural area with hiking and biking trails. Just make sure to bring some aspirin for the inevitable hangover (and a lawyer’s number on speed dial).

#9 – St. Pete Beach

It’s got a beautiful beach and a charming downtown area, but the real draw around here is the Salvador Dali Museum, where you can marvel at the surrealist artwork (or just pretend you understand it). Just don’t get too lost in the mind-bending paintings.

In addition to the beach and the Dali Museum, St. Pete Beach is also home to the St. Pete Beach Community Center and Aquatic Complex, offering recreational activities and fitness classes, and the St. Pete Beach Seafood and Music Festival, an annual event featuring live music and seafood dishes.

Speaking of which, the food scene in St. Pete Beach is also not to be missed. From casual beachside seafood shacks to upscale restaurants featuring local and international cuisine, there’s something for every taste and budget. And for a taste of local culture, be sure to check out the Gulfport Art District, where you can browse the work of local artists and take in some live music.

#10 – Jupiter

Ah, Jupiter, the charming little beach town where everyone is just so darn laid-back and relaxed. No stress or city life here, just endless days lounging on the beach. In all seriousness, this small (but constantly growing) beach town is well known for its stunning beaches and laid-back vibe. It’s the perfect place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

In addition to the beautiful sandy beaches, Jupiter is also home to the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum, where you can learn about the history of the area and climb to the top of the lighthouse for breathtaking views, and the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, a rehabilitation center and nature preserve.

But seriously, if you want to spend your vacation doing absolutely nothing and getting a tan surrounded by beauty, then Jupiter might be the place for you.

Conclusion

So, we’ve covered 10 of the best cities you can visit in Florida, from beaches and nightlife, to alligator farms and luxury shopping, to six-toed cats and Harry Potter.

So go ahead, embrace your inner Floridian and book a vacation to the Sunshine State to have the time of your life.

And remember, if you’re not having fun in Florida—you’re doing it wrong.
